CaN (Computer & Network) Tips

요즘 다양한 위젯(widget)들이 나와 PC 쓰는 재미를 더해 주고 있다. 나도 위젯을 쓰기 시작한 지는 꽤 오래되었지만, PC 사용에 부담도 덜 주면서 수시로 필요한 정보를 확인할 수 있는 것들을 찾다 보니 사용하는 위젯의 개수는 많지 않다.

야후! 위젯 의 전신인 Konfabulator부터 사용하기 시작한 것으로 기억하는데, 가장 요긴한 품목은 일정 관리와 날씨이다.


산뜻한 그래픽과 여러 날의 날씨를 확인할 수 있고 현재 날씨를 비교적 상세하게 확인할 수 있는 기능 때문에 상당히 오랫동안 사용했다.

이후에 구글 데스크톱 의 구글 가젯 중 날씨 가젯을 썼는데 구글 데스크톱은 아직도 쓰고 있지만 가젯은 쓰지 않기로 해서 다시 야후! 웨더로 돌아가기도 했다.


그다음 Windows Vista가 나오면서 여기에 내장된 사이드바(Windows Sidebar)에 있는 날씨 가젯도 확인해 보았다. 최근에 이 날씨 가젯이 업데이트되었다는 글 도 보았다.


하지만, 내가 Vista의 사이드바 자체를 쓰지 않는 관계로 이 역시 사용하지 않고 있다. 물론 날씨 가젯에도 조금 아쉬운 점들이 있다.

아무튼, 현재 내가 쓰고 있는 날씨 정보 프로그램은 웹 브라우저인 Maxthon Browser 의 사이드바에 추가해 사용하고 있는 Weather5라고 하는 플러그인¹이다. 어차피 PC를 사용 중에는 웹 브라우저를 항상 켜놓게 되고, Maxthon의 사이드바는 별도의 창으로 분리가 가능하기 때문에 바탕 화면 한쪽에 별도의 프로그램처럼 항상 그 자리에 띄워 놓을 수 있어 편리하다. 또한, 한눈에 볼 수 있는 정보도 상당히 자세하고 방대하다. 아래 그림은 내가 현재 사용 중인 상태 그대로이다.


물론 창의 크기는 전체 모니터 크기만큼까지 넓힐 수 있다. 아래는 환경 설정 메뉴들이다.


Maxthon의 초기 버전부터 개발되어 배포되었고, 2007년 1월 이후로 업데이트가 없지만, 아직도 문제없이 잘 돌아가는 좋은 프로그램이다.

탭 브라우저로 유명한 Maxthon이 11월 12일자로 2.1.5.1170 베타 버전을 내놓은 후 11월 19일자로 정식 버전인 2.1.5.1250을 출시하였다. 9월 2일에 2.1.4 버전이 나온 이후 오래간만의 업데이트이다.

가급적 사용하던 버전은 깨끗하게 삭제(uninstall)하고 새로 설치하여 사용하는 것이 좋다. 이번 버전부터는 설치 과정에서 전에 보이지 않던 사용자 경험 개선 프로그램(User Experience Improvement Program)에 참여 여부를 묻는 창이 나타난다.

2.0.8 버전부터 인터넷 익스플로러의 IE 툴바 및 확장 기능을 지원하기 시작하였고, 이번 버전의 가장 큰 특징은 플러그인 바(plugin bar)가 없어진 점이다.
